It takes 200-400 years to form 1 cm of soil. In order to accumulate enough substances to make soil fertile, it takes 3000 years. Every year 24 billion tons of fertile soil is lost due to erosion. Fire, mining, or intensive agricultural activity is the major cause of soil loss/erosion. The subsoil left over has less ability to store water and nutrients since the subsoil often has poor physical and chemical properties.
